Choose the right type and the scale performs for years; choose the wrong one and you get drift, off-center errors, and premature failure. A load cell is a transducer that converts force into a measurable electrical signal. In most industrial scales, strain gauges bonded to a machined metal element change electrical resistance as the element flexes under load. Single-Point Load Cells

The single-point load cell is the workhorse of small and mid-size platform scales. One cell mounts under the center of the platform and compensates for off-center loading, so the reading stays consistent whether the item sits mid-platter or near a corner.

Compression Canister Load Cells

Canister load cells are cylindrical columns loaded straight down in compression — mechanically simple, extremely robust, and the original truck scale cell. They still serve where capacities run highest.

  • Where you'll find them: High-capacity truck scales, rail scales, tank and silo weighing, vessel and hopper legs, and structural force monitoring.
  • Typical capacities: From a few thousand pounds to 1,000,000 lb and beyond — the highest capacities of any common load cell type.
  • Loading requirements: Canisters want pure axial compression, so they rely on rocker assemblies or self-aligning mounts to keep the load vertical; misalignment introduces error and shortens life.
  • Totalized systems: A tank on three or four canister (or shear beam) cells becomes a vessel weighing system — far more reliable for inventory than level sensors on powders and liquids that bridge, foam, or coat tank walls.

S-Beam (Tension) Load Cells

The S-beam — named for its S-shaped machined profile — is the standard cell for tension applications, measuring loads that hang rather than press. Threaded holes at top and bottom let it install in-line with rods, eye bolts, and shackles, and many S-beams work in both tension and compression.

  • Where you'll find them: Crane scales and hanging scales, suspended hoppers and batching vessels, and mechanical-to-electronic lever scale conversions, where the cell measures the pull of the steelyard rod.
  • Typical capacities: Roughly 25 lb to 20,000 lb.

Hydraulic Load Cells

Matching Load Cell Type to the Environment

The application picks the load cell's shape; the environment picks its construction and certification.

  • Washdown and corrosive areas: Food, beverage, and pharmaceutical plants that sanitize equipment daily need hermetically sealed stainless steel cells — standard on quality washdown scales. Potted aluminum cells that survive a dry warehouse fail quickly under hose-down cleaning.
  • Hazardous locations: Areas with flammable dusts, vapors, or gases — grain handling, solvent rooms, paint lines — require intrinsically safe scales or cells used with intrinsic safety barriers, so the circuit cannot release enough energy to ignite the atmosphere.   • Capacity per cell: Total capacity divided by the number of cells, with headroom for dead load and shock. Undersized cells fail early; drastically oversized cells cost resolution.
  • Platform or structure: One cell under a small platform, four under a floor scale, eight to ten under a truck scale, three or four under a tank — the structure dictates the count and mounting style.
  • Environment: Wet, corrosive, hazardous, or outdoor conditions set the material, sealing, and certification requirements above.
