How to Choose a Bench Scale: A Buyer's Guide

A bench scale is the workhorse of most weighing operations — portioning ingredients, verifying package weights, counting parts, checking shipments — and the wrong one costs money every single day it's on the bench. Undersized capacity leads to overload damage. Too-coarse readability fails QA checks. A mild steel base in a washdown environment corrodes within months. Start With Capacity

Capacity is the first spec to lock down, because it rules everything else in or out. Weigh your heaviest realistic load — container included — and work from there.

  • Size for the heaviest load, not the average: A bench scale should have a capacity comfortably above the heaviest item it will ever see.   • Don't massively oversize either: Capacity and readability are linked — a higher-capacity scale generally reads in coarser increments. Buying a 300 lb scale to weigh 5 lb portions sacrifices the resolution your application needs.
  • Common bench scale ranges: Most bench scales fall between 6 lb and 600 lb capacity. If your loads regularly exceed that, you're in floor scale territory; if you need to see fractions of a gram, look at a precision balance instead.

Readability: How Fine Does the Scale Need to Read?

Readability (also called division size or resolution) is the smallest weight increment the scale displays — 0.001 lb, 0.01 lb, 0.5 g, and so on. It determines whether the scale can actually do the job you're buying it for.

  • Match readability to your tolerance: As a rule of thumb, readability should be at least 10× finer than the tolerance you're checking against. Verifying a 100 g ± 2 g fill on a scale that reads in 1 g increments works; doing it on a scale that reads in 5 g increments doesn't.
  • Capacity-to-readability ratio: A typical bench scale resolves its capacity into 5,000–30,000 displayed divisions. A 60 lb × 0.002 lb scale (30,000 divisions) is a different instrument than a 60 lb × 0.01 lb scale (6,000 divisions) — and priced accordingly. Pay for the resolution your process requires, not the biggest number on the spec sheet.
  • Displayed vs. certified readability: On NTEP scales, the legal-for-trade division (marked "e") is often coarser than what the display can show. If you sell by weight, the certified division is the one that counts — more on that below.

Platform Size and Construction

The platform has to fit the product, fit the workspace, and survive the workload.

  • Fit the footprint of what you weigh: The load should sit fully on the platter — overhanging loads produce off-center loading errors and stress the load cell. Common bench scale platforms run from 10" × 10" up to 24" × 24"; measure your largest container before choosing.
  • Fit the bench, too: Bench scales are designed for counter or table use. Confirm the platform plus indicator (column-mounted or remote) fits the workstation without crowding the operator.
  • Mild steel vs. stainless steel: Painted mild steel bases are economical for dry, general-purpose weighing. Stainless steel platters and bases resist corrosion and are the default for food, pharma, and chemical environments. When in doubt, stainless costs a little more up front and lasts years longer.
  • Ball-top and roller conveyor tops: For shipping and receiving lines where packages slide across the scale, ball-transfer or roller tops let boxes move on and off without lifting — a common pairing with shipping scales in parcel operations.

Environment: Washdown, Moisture, and Hazardous Areas

Where the scale lives matters as much as what it weighs. Environment mismatches are the fastest way to kill a bench scale.

  • Washdown environments need IP-rated equipment: If the scale gets hosed down, sanitized, or works around heavy moisture — food processing, meat and seafood, dairy, pharma — choose a scale rated IP65 or higher; IP66/IP68/IP69K stainless models withstand high-pressure and high-temperature washdown.   • Temperature and dust: Cold storage, ovens nearby, and dusty milling environments all affect load cell performance and electronics. Tell your scale supplier about the environment honestly; the right enclosure rating is cheaper than repeat repairs.
  • Hazardous locations: Flammable dust, vapors, or solvents require intrinsically safe equipment — a separate certification entirely. Don't put a standard bench scale in a classified area.

NTEP and Legal-for-Trade Requirements

If you buy or sell anything by weight, certification isn't optional — it's the law.

  • When NTEP is required: Any scale used in commercial transactions based on weight — selling product by the pound, buying material by weight, charging by weight — must be legal for trade under NIST Handbook 44.   • RS-232 and USB: Still the standard interfaces for connecting a scale to a label printer, PC, or filling controller. Most industrial indicators include RS-232; USB is common on newer models.
  • Ethernet and Wi-Fi: Networked indicators push weighments directly into WMS, ERP, or quality systems — eliminating manual transcription, which is where most weighing data errors actually happen.
  • Checkweighing outputs: Setpoint relay outputs can drive lights, alarms, or diverters on a line, turning a static bench scale into a simple in-line QC station.

What is the difference between a bench scale and a floor scale?

A bench scale sits on a counter or table and typically handles 6 to 600 lb with platforms up to about 24" × 24".
